Vera's background

Main elements, towards new developments

This forder proposes three kinds of information, appearing as essential (work in progress: we could imagine that a self presentation of the teacher could be also essential):

  • some elements of the teacher's history that can inform her dispositions for teaching;
  • the conditions of the first encounter with the teacher;
  • some elements of the methodological contract related to the documentation valise at stake.
1) Some elements of the teacher's history that can inform her dispositions for teaching

Gueudet et al. (2013) propose some elements of Vera teaching history:

"Vera has worked at lower secondary school for the past three years, where she teaches (only) mathematics. Previously, she had worked for ten years at a vocational (upper secondary) school, where she taught mathematics and physics [...].

In her interview, Vera cited fourteen kinds of agents who intervened in her work. Apart from the school principal, the inspector, teacher educators, and of course the pupils, all of these ‘agents’ were teachers. She met some of these teachers in the context of professional development. In particular, she followed one year of master in educational sciences, where she appreciated to discuss the teaching of other topics with colleagues. She did not directly describe exchanges with the teacher educators, but declared that she appreciated all the resources she discovered during the training – in particular, during a training for a specific IT/internet certificate. She also described as ‘colleagues’ teachers whom she had never met, but who designed websites, or online resources she appreciated. She cited a web site about mathematics and literature, resources on official websites and a website called “dicomath” about vocabulary. For this last website, she contacted the author by e-mail to ask him about the existence of an update. She also communicated online with members of the Sesamath association.

Vera was not interested in participating in existing collective structures, like APMEP (Nationale Association of Mathematics Teachers), or the IREM (Institute of Research on Mathematics Teaching). She considered that “they already have many teachers”, and that the most important was the local collaborative work, inside her school, or with schools nearby. She reported on several attempts of collaborating with colleagues of other schools, or with physics colleagues in her own school, but all these attempts remained unsuccessful. In terms of mathematics colleagues at her school she also expressed her disappointment about insufficient collaborative work. However, when we re-analysed our data, we found that several kinds of collaboration seemed to actually exist. Vera’s negative appreciation seemed to come essentially from her comparison with the collaborative activities at her previous school (the vocational school where she had taught mathematics and physics)."

A critical fact to be noticed: in 2013, it was the first time that the teacher had in charge a 8 grade class. Therefore this lesson cycle can be considered as an initiatic travel...

2) The conditions of the first encounter with the teacher

 In 2012, the authors of the paper (Gueudet et al. 2013) were looking for interviewing a teacher using the textbooks designed by Sesamath, an online teacher association. A sollicitation was posted on the Sesamath mailing list. A few numbers of teachers sent a positive answer. Among them, a single teacher, Vera, worked in a school near Lyon. For this reason, Vera was chosen. In 2012, this first encounter gave matter to a first set of data (see folder Vera general resources). On year later, a new contact was made for the purpose of the documentation valise.

3) Some elements of the methodological contract related to the documentation valise at stake

We gave below the content of the emails exchanged with Vera to prepare the circumstances of the lesson cycle giving the matter of the documentation valise. It enlightens some aspects of the methodological contract.

Researcher to Vera, 2 mars 2013

  • le premier, là où tu prépares normalement ton cours (chez toi?), le cours précisément sur les pourcentages ;
  • le troisième au moment où tu corrigeras des copies d'élèves relatives au travail que tu as fait sur les pourcentages ;

Ce programme me convient.

Researcher to Vera, le 10 mars 2013

  • le 10 mai pour le cours (compte une demi journée), en espérant que cela tombera sur une classe possible, et que tu auras un peu de temps pour avant et pour après ton cours;
